Who Can Use The Thorpe Mill Evacuation Mattress Overlay?
This overlay is ideal for both residential-care and clinical usage, offering an easy-fit over a patients mattresses that can remain there permanently for use when needed. It is ideal for use with patients with limited or impaired mobility, and in care-situations where more than one carer is available for aiding transport.
The evacuation overlay requires two people to carry it, with large pulling straps at either end, and so is not suitable for solo-carers.
How Do I Use the Thorpe Mill Overlay?
The Thorpe Mill Mattress Evacuation Overlay is intended to be used by two trained operators and only for the intended purpose of an emergency evacuation. The evacuation sheet is designed to be placed over the non-ambulant user’s mattress. Please see below for instructions on how to use the overlay in transit:
- Ensure users feet are in the foot pocket
- Pull the cocooning flaps round the user
- Tighten security belts over the user
- The operators can then manoeuvre the user to safety using the loops
- If moving downstairs, ensure the users head is at the top of the unit and feet first down the stairs
- Ensure the operators remain in full control of the EVO

How Secure Is this Evacuation Mattress Sledge?
The Emergency Evacuation Mattress Overlay is held in place on the bed with tucks which have the dual purpose of providing cocooning flaps which secure the patient in place during an evacuation. For extra security, the evacuation overlay features durable webbing, buckles, and a foot pocket which all work together to hold the user in place, while a loop at the head end holds the unit back when going downstairs.
What Is the Emergency Evacuation Overlay Made From?
The top surface of the Emergency Evacuation Mattress Overlay is covered in a vapour permeable, two way stretch, wipe clean material for easy maintenance. The base of the Emergency Evacuation Mattress Overlay is covered with hard wearing coated PVC which allows it to slide easily over any surface including stairs.
How Many People Are Required to Operate the Evacuation Overlay?
Thanks to strong and stable fixed straps and the ability to slide the overlay easily, just two people are required to operate the overlay safely and securely.
